When India 'missed' the Universe

Despite getting a broad exposure to the world of fashion, these former Miss Indias failed to bring the Miss Universe crown home. As Ekta Chaudhary lost the rounds this year, we bring to you some beautiful and talented ladies who couldn't make it to the mother of all crowns!



Ekta Chaudhary, 2009: Delhi girl Ekta Chaudhary failed to make it to the top 15 finalists of the Miss Universe 2009 contest, dashing hopes of getting the crown back to India once again. Even after making waves with her red evening gown and flaunting her curves at the swimsuit round, Ekta could not manage to get the coveted crown. Was it her tomboyish look that contributed to her loss?  (AGENCIES)

Puja Gupta, 2007: Puja Gupta, an aspiring writer, won the Miss India title in 2007. She not only made to the top ten at the Miss Universe pageant at Mexico but also secured a second place. But despite of her being so close to the coveted crown, Puja didn't managed to win the title.  (AFP)
Neha Kapur, 2006: Hailing from Delhi, 22-year-old Neha Kapur won Miss India-Universe in 2006. A trained dancer in Bharatanatyam and Kathak, she also won the Femina Miss Fresh Face and Femina Miss Photogenic awards in the pageant. Amrita Thapar, 2005: Fashion designer Amrita Thapar was crowned Miss India Universe 2005 at a glittering function in Mumbai. Then she went on to represent India at the Miss Universe pageant 2005, where she lost out to the other beauties from around the world. nasty gossips blamed it on her thunderous thighs!  (AFP/Saeed Khan)
Tanushree Dutta, 2004: Tanushree Dutta won the Femina Miss India title in 2004 and was placed among the top ten in the Miss Universe 2004 pageant held in Quito, Ecuador. But she could not impress the judges and missed out on the title.  (AFP)

Neha Dhupia, 2002: It started with a dream for the tall and slender Neha, who after winning the Miss India Universe in 2002, focused on the Miss Universe title. Celina Jaitley, 2001: Celina became famous overnight after she won the highly-coveted Miss India Universe crown in 2001. Everyone back home had high hopes from the light-eyed beauty with an hourglass figure, but dreams were shattered when she made it to the Final 5, failed to win the title of Miss Universe.  (AGENCIES)
